OTCBB - OTC Stock

There exists in the United States, a parallel system of trading in stocks over the counter (the OTCBB), in effect these stocks are not registered at any of the higher stock exchanges like NASDAQ. This type of OTC stock (over-the-counter) trading is carried out by movers of the market that deal in OTCBB and Pink Sheets securities. These deals are transacted by using inter-dealer quotation services, which are known as Pink Quote- since they are operated by Pink OTC Markets, and also through the OTC stock Bulletin Board (OTCBB).

In the context of the stock market, the Pink Sheet stocks refer to a type of stock and not necessarily the color of the stock! The term Pink sheet stock originated from the fact that in the past, these stocks were quoted for in a pink colored paper.
